Our annual “Nepal in the Park” fundraiser was held on 20th August at the JC Slaughter Picnic Grounds, Mt Coot-tha.
“Base camp” was decorated with colourful prayer flags and marquees, and the sublime setting was enhanced by perfect weather which also provided ideal conditions for the 119 people who signed up for the hike.
The Nepalese community once again donated, prepared and cooked delicious meals for those who stayed for lunch, and the tea and coffee stall did a roaring trade in light refreshments.
Our market stall was very well patronised, as was the sale of home grown plants, a new initiative introduced at the 2016 Nepal in the Park.
An animal spotting competition, face painting, donut eating, pinata and bocce kept the children happy. Nepalese dancers Serene Shrestha, Ely Adhikari and Angel Neupane danced beautifully and were joined by a few enthusiastic children from the crowd.
For the adults, there was a Nepali cooking demonstration from Rajani Khadka and some fabulous musical entertainment: Suresh Shrestha and Nawaraz Bhandari playing traditional Nepalese flute and madal, then Ruth Ross and Tony Dean from Luya Music, with Ruth playing the violin and Tony playing guitar and singing. All the music was great and appreciated by those on the hill relaxing on a lovely Mt Coot-tha morning.
All up we raised nearly $9000 towards our earthquake rebuilding appeal, and the events committee would like to thank our wonderful supporters and helpers for making this such a successful and enjoyable day.
NAFA would like to thank the following donors for donating prizes to Nepal in the Park
and Ram Krishna Bhandare of Kenmore Fruit Bowl for donating fruit for the hikers.
