With the help of NAFA and supporters electricity has been installed in the remote village of Lumsa

Thank you to all our generous donors who have supported this appeal by donations totalling $4600.  The Lumsa community were very grateful for this added help and send their thanks and best wishes to everyone in NAFA.  This has helped them reduce their business loan and made it easier for them to address their personal loans which they took out to complete this project.  They also thank NAFA for their  initial donation of $5000 in May 2011.

Appeal for funding for

the building of micro-hydro project in

remote village of Lumsa in Solu Khumbu

11.5 kW Micro-hydropower

It is hard work without machinery

NAFA is seeking donations from individuals or companies to provide financial assistance for a micro-hydropower project that would provide electricity for the entire village of Lumsa (109 households) as well as to the school that services the village and surrounding area.

Currently some households use kerosene, candles or dry cell batteries for lighting while others only have the light from their cooking fires.  Not only will the micro hydropower allow the households to save money on their current use of expensive alternatives but it will give the adults an opportunity to do chores around the home and the children can complete their homework and study.  By providing better lighting in the home it will help prevent mishaps like burns or house fires and other household accidents.

Villagers provide volunteer labour to complete the project

The electricity would facilitate the development of the village and help break the continuous cycle of poverty. Currently the potential renewable energy resource of the stream flowing near the village is being wasted instead of being used for the betterment of the village and the global environment.

The total estimated cost to construct the system is approximately $72,000.  A subsidy of approximately $36,500 from Denmark/Norway (through the Nepalese Government Alternative Energy Promotion Centre) and the local DDC/VDC has been approved. The local community has raised $17,700 and has committed to contributing approximately $6,000 in volunteer labour and materials.

Building the micro-hydro generator housing

The Lumsa community committee has obtained a loan for the balance of $11,800 from a trekking agency in Kathmandu which they have to repay.  Villagers will also have to pay a connection fee and a monthly tariff to ensure the sustainability of the system once it is up and running.

At this stage NAFA has approved $5,000 towards this project and we are seeking donations big or small to help the villagers to repay the loan.

Please contact Ross Hazelwood nafasec@hotmail.com  if you are interested in supporting this exciting community driven development project for a remote village in Nepal or would like more information. All donations are tax deductible.

Tawal Teacher Sponsorship Appeal

Students overjoyed with their first exposure to colourful illustrated storybooks

NAFA is seeking individuals or groups who could commit to sponsor a teacher in the remote village of Tawal, Nepal at the current subsidised rate of AUS $3,200 per year (current at 2010) over a three year period.

(Part sponsorship would also be welcomed)

Science equipment for high school students

Your donation will help pay the salary of Deepak Pandy, the Science teacher at Tawal, who is currently being sponsored by NAFA from its general fundraising efforts until the Nepalese government is able to fund more teachers in remote villages.

Employing Deepak at the local school encourages up to 35 children to remain in Tawal in the higher classes of 8, 9 and 10 where they otherwise would have to walk up to 3 hours a day to access the nearest school with a science teacher.

FEAT for Youth

A grade 9 student who aspires to be a teacher does work experience at Thimi School

FEAT for YOUTH is a further education and training program which aims to improve employment opportunities for students in NAFA and JOY supported projects, who are nearing school completion. Students from Prisoners Assistance (PA) Nepal, Tawal school, Vinayak Shiksha Niketan (VSN) School (Thimi), and young people with disabilities will be involved. These students need help to overcome obstacles to finding employment, such as family poverty, remote area living, separation from family, and physical disability.

FEAT activities focus on building the student’s self esteem, confidence and support networks, and providing work skills training and further education, to help them to find jobs and achieve their potential.

Remote Area Eye Clinics

Location: Remote areas in Nepal

Date: 1990 ongoing

Partner: the JOY Foundation

Objective: To sponsor one remote eye screening and cataract surgery eye clinic per year, conducted by the Tilganga Eye Centre based in Kathmandu.

Outcomes: From 1990 to 2008, NAFA has funded 17 eye clinics either by full or co-sponsorship, a total cost of $60,000. Approximately 2,850 people have had their sight restored free of charge.

Details: The Tilganga Eye Centre provides opthamalogical services to Nepali people and operates an Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) labratory, for the manufacture of lenses for implants during cataract surgery. Tilganga Eye Centre conducts numerous remote area eye clinics free of charge in inaccessible areas where people generally do not have access to medical services.
The remote area medical team members are volunteers and surgery and other eye care is provided free of charge. However, each remote clinic costs over $6,000 due to food provided to patients, transport, and medical equipment costs. Usually a school building is set up as a temporary ‘hospital’ and in most clinics over 1,000 people are screened; while 250 to 300 are operated on for removal of cataracts and replacement with lenses.

Appeal: Help NAFA continue to give the gift of eyesight back to the people in remote villages by donating to this project.  See our donations page

Tawal Health Clinic

Location: Ganesh Himal area in remote hilly region of Nepal

Date: 2001 ongoing

Partners: Hilly Region Development Club

Objective: To support the operation of a remote health clinic that services approximately 6000 people in the remote hilly region of Nepal, from the villages of Tawal, Kutal, Salleri, and Dhusini.

A simple saline drip can be a lifesaving measure

Outcomes: Since constructing and fitting out the health clinic, NAFA has supported the operation of the clinic by providing a yearly subsidy towards the salaries of the health workers employed at the clinic.

Details:  The health clinic provides primary health care to Tawal and nearby villages. The closest health clinic before the clinic at Tawal was built is nearly two days walk away. NAFA has supported the clinic over the years by providing extra training in mid-wifery and through the purchase of medical equipment and supplies.

Appeal: Although NAFA has some generous individuals supporting this project, further donations are needed to ensure future sustainability.

Collect a cap and buy a book

NAFA supports the development of libraries and science education in rural and remote schools in Nepal. We believe education will help underprivileged children in these isolated areas to break the poverty cycle by having better employment opportunities in the future.

We currently support nine rural schools and all money raised though this venture will be spent on bi-lingual Nepali/English books and science equipment.

Room to Read books are written and produced in Nepal, they are colourful, robust storybooks with excellent illustrations and text relevent to young Nepalese children. Each book costs between $1 and $3 a book. This is an extraordinary and affordable opportunity to help children in Nepal to improve their life situation.      www.roomtoread.org

Thinking about putting NAFA into your will?

Make a Bequest

Making a bequest – naming NAFA as a beneficiary in your will is a simple and powerful way to help us deliver ongoing programs empowering under-privileged people in Nepal.  NAFA is a Brisbane based non-political, non-profit secular organisation.  100% of donations (which are tax deductible) go directly to NAFA’s aid projects ‘on the ground’ in Nepal.

How to make a bequest

If you have decided to make a bequest to NAFA in your Will, please consult your solicitor if you have one, or your local community legal centre.  We recommend you seek specific taxation and legal advice from qualified practitioners.  They will be interested to know we have tax-deductibility gift recipient status, and all donations to our Overseas Aid Fund are exempt from Australian Income Tax.

Types of bequests

Percentage bequest

Some people may wish to share their estate between family members and a charitable organization.  This can be done by stating in the Will the percentage to be allocated to each party.

Specific bequest

A Will may just specify items such as certain property, money, shares, life insurance policy to be donated to a charitable organisation.

Residual bequest

A Will may state that any amount left over may be donated to the charitable organization, once certain provisions are made for family and friends.
